Paladon Systems

514th System for Karachaganak Field Shipped

Dual cylinder and low temperature linear valve actuator supplied to support further development of one of the world's largest gas fields

Fitted to a 6” Class 2500 gate valve requiring high thrusts but with significant valve actuator size constraints, Paladon Systems designed a dual 74cm diameter stacked pneumatic piston arrangement for the spring-return valve actuator that is able to generate up to 210 kN and 225 kN of thrust on the pneumatic and spring strokes respectively. Due to a 10 second minimum valve operating time requirement, the control system uses a solenoid valve to drive a large pilot valve during valve opening and each pneumatic cylinder is fitted with a quick exhaust valve to facilitate rapid valve closing. Suitable for operation down to -45°C, the control system was manufactured from stainless steel and supplied in a lockable control cabinet to prevent unauthorised operation.

Paladon Systems has provided over 514 valve actuators and control systems to the Karachaganak field since 1999 to operate 1” to 20” ball and gate valves.

The Karachaganak field, discovered in 1979, is one of the world’s largest gas and condensate fields. Located in north-west Kazakhstan and covering an area of over 280 square kilometres, it holds estimated hydrocarbons initially in place (HIIP) of 9 billion barrels of condensate and 48 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas, with estimated gross reserves of over 2.4 billion barrels of condensate and 16 tcf of gas.
