Electro-Hydraulic actuator system upgraded to a HIPPS at National Grid’s Carnforth compressor station
After 12 years of operation, Paladon Systems was recently asked to upgrade an electro-hydraulic actuator system to a HIPPS.
Applications Engineer Malcolm Norton, “Back in 2000 we installed an electro-hydraulic actuator system on a 36” gas pipeline that connects National Grid’s Carnforth and Nether Kellet compressor stations. The main function of the system was to protect the Carnforth site from over-pressurization by monitoring the pipeline’s pressure, and closing the mainline ball valve in the event that 2 out of 3 pressure pilot valves detected a high pressure event. The application was extremely technically challenging as we were asked to design a system that relied purely on hydraulic pressure pilot and pilot valves to provide 2oo3 logic solving capability. After 12 years of operation, National Grid wanted to enhance the reliability of the system and add data logging and data analysis capabilities by replacing the hydraulic logic system with electronic pressure sensors connected to a logic solver located in a safe area. We are pleased to maintain our long track-record of providing excellent support for National Grid by successfully retrofitting the HIPPS on schedule.”
